Tencent endeavours to make ‘Elder Ring’ free-to-play game

Elden Ring is an action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware went live in February 2022, and proved to be a huge success. With sales of over 20 million in the first year, it became the second-best-selling game for the year.

In the same year, Tencent acquired licensing rights from FromSoftware. A report from Reuters has revealed that Tencent is working on a mobile version of the game and has plans to make it free to play.

Currently, the Elden Ring video game is priced at $59.99.

Similar to HoYoVerse’s Genshin Impact, Tencent is looking forward to including in-app purchases and freeing it from the price tag.

Having said that the mobile version of Elden Ring is in development, making the version free to play is reasonable. Most mobile games like PUBG Mobile and Clash of Clans work on similar deductions.

However, Elden Ring works on a different premise. The mechanism of allowing players to partake complete experience after the purchase is hindering Tencent’s plans.

The source has confirmed that the developers are working on the Elden Ring prototype, and soon the gamers can live in the Elden Ring open-world.

But, don’t expect an immediate response as it mentions ‘But progress has been slow’ and hope that the project doesn’t end up with a similar fate to Nier.

For those who are unaware, Tencent was working on adapting the Nier franchise to mobile devices, however, the project was closed due to monetization concerns. And a few weeks ago it laid off its employees.

The source of the report by Reuters is anonymous and has declined to come on media. On the other hand, Tencent and FromSoftware haven’t responded to this claim yet.

Gamer Stones has reached out to Tencent regarding the claim and will let know of their response.
