Chrome for Android now automatically closes all duplicate tabs

Now, Chrome for Android automatically closes all duplicate tabs, with the exception of the most recent used copy.

With the increasing hunger for information, many tabs are opened, which ultimately remain on your New Tabs Page section. Though Chrome for Android allows you to close all inactive tabs, there wasn’t an available method to close all duplicate tabs. The only way to do it was to close these tabs, which is sometimes daunting manually.

For reference, Chrome for desktops already had a manual action to close inactive and duplicate tabs. To do it, users need to click on the drop-down menu adjacent to the New Tab option > Organize > Review Inactive Tabs > Close All.

In the recent update of Chrome Canary for Android, Google has added a new toggle to archive duplicate tabs (along with inactive ones). All duplicate tabs will be archived when enabling the toggle, except for the most recently used copy.

Interestingly, you can even specify the inactive period of your tabs. You also have a toggle to close all inactive tabs after 60 days.

The new toggle to archive duplicate tabs is available in Chrome Canary 133.0.6898.0 by enabling the flags: #android-tab-declutter-archive-all-but-active-tab and #android-tab-declutter-archive-duplicate-tabs.

When you enable these flags, you can find the Close Duplicate Tabs section from Settings > Tabs (under Advanced section) > Inactive > Archive Duplicate Tabs.

Google will likely enable these flags by default in a future release of Chrome. If you don’t want to wait, search chrome://flags in the address bar and toggle these flags on right now.
